What is a 250GD Wolf?

We know it as the G-Wagen today, but this luxury utility vehicle was once a serious military machine. In fact, the name Wolf was given to the 250GD by the German Bundeswehr armed forces. This military-spec version of the G-Wagen sports two doors, a convertible top, a fold-down windshield and a short wheelbase. Explore the heritage of this Mercedes-Benz vehicle and find out why it is one of the most distinctive G-Wagens ever produced.

The Storied History of the Wolf

The Mercedes-Benz 250GD Wolf was developed for use as a military infantry utility vehicle, designed to perform well in the world's most unforgiving environments. In addition to the Bundeswehr, the Norwegian, Canadian, and many other armed forces relied on this version of the G-Wagen.

The Wolf was used and deployed in countries all around the world such as Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Italy, and Spain. Some countries even used the 250GD as an emergency services transport vehicle, as it was popular with fire stations and other emergency brigades.

Designed for Combat

Unlike the modern G-Wagen you will find at your local Mercedes dealership, the Wolf's original interior was stripped of all but the basics. It included purpose-built features designed to aid a soldier in an active combat environment, such as a map light, turret mount, ammo box, and fold-down windshield.

The Wolf was built with many off-roading components that allowed it to thrive in harsh conditions. It was built with the extremely reliable OM602 diesel engine, front and rear differential lockers, live axles, and a fully synchronized 4x4 transfer case.

A Vehicle Like No Other

The Wolf continues to draw fascination decades after its release because of a few unique features. It was one of the few G-Wagen models ever made with a convertible top, and it epitomizes the spirit of a rugged vehicle that can truly go anywhere or do anything. With few examples of the Wolf remaining, it now has collector-grade rarity with a one-of-a-kind drive. The 1990s G-Wagon era that produced it remains the period collectors focus on, and the Wolf is part of the reason.

The EMC Restoration Process

At Expedition Motor Company, we have restored the 250GD Wolf exclusively since 2017, with more than 180 trucks completed and delivered across six build generations. Every restoration begins the same way: the truck is disassembled entirely, the body is separated from the frame, and both are taken to bare metal. There is no catalog of new body components for the W461, so our team hand-mends every panel and performs all of the metal work required to return each piece to OEM specification before anything is refinished.

From that foundation, every subsystem, the engine, chassis, suspension, brakes, electrical, and interior, is restored or re-engineered under one roof by our team of 26 craftsmen. Nothing is sent outside our shop, and each build absorbs more than 2,500 man-hours before it is ready to leave our hands. We produce no more than 24 trucks per year, and every build is photographed throughout the process, so the truck is delivered with the record of its own restoration.

Powertrain selection is one of the most personal choices in the commission process, and we offer three drivetrain directions: the upgraded OM605a and OM606a turbodiesels, which keep the truck within the Mercedes diesel family it served with, and the 430 horsepower 6.2L LS3 V8. Around the client's choice of engine, our restorations integrate the equipment that makes the truck usable every day:

  • Weatherproof interior upholstery, offered in more than 35 colors
  • Air conditioning, heat, and front and rear heated seats
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay, a backup camera, and phone chargers front and rear
  • Premium Harman sound
  • Upgraded AMG braking package
  • Our proprietary suspension system, developed for the platform

Each of these is integrated with restraint, so the cabin still reads as the purposeful, period-correct environment it was designed to be. The analog character of the truck is the point of the restoration, and everything we add is engineered to preserve that experience while providing modern usability. A full picture of what we build is in the EMC model range, and each truck is delivered with a one-year bumper-to-bumper warranty, two-year powertrain warranty, and complimentary enclosed transport to your door.
